Life goals (When the newspaper calls you a mythical sorceress)

Life goals (When the newspaper calls you a mythical sorceress)

This spring I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with A.V. Kitching, a reporter with the Winnipeg Free Press who has set out to tell the unsung stories of the artists, craftspeople, and makers of Manitoba.  The challenges of forging ones way through a battlefield of capitalism is not lost on her, she is championing local businesses by telling their stories once a week in her series called The Creators.  Not all heroes wear capes.

Rural businesses like myself see unique challenges, less opportunities to get outrselves in front of a wider audience, difficulties and extra costs getting our products into the hands of Winnipeggers.  Being featured in this column is a huge signal boost for us makers tucked into the hidden nooks of the province.

In a world of big warehouse websites with rock-bottom prices, low quality fast-fashion, "free" shipping,  and dubious business practices it is easy to feel unseen and misunderstood. Reminding readers of the humans behind their slow, skillful craft, and why these small businesses matter is so important. Supporting local businesses reduces negative impacts on the environment, builds community, and keeps more money in the local economy.

Plus we make some pretty cool things, the amount of talent and creativity close to home is so inspiring. So go out, buy goods from small businesses, use them, love them, tell your friends about them.
Check out The Creators series weekly in the Winnipeg Free Press to learn about more amazing small businesses!
